Table of Contents
TL;DR: Every major Chinese airport has good transport links to the city center. Metro is cheapest (¥5-30), airport express trains are fastest (Maglev: 8 min, ¥50), Didi/taxi is most convenient (¥100-250). Beijing Daxing (PKX) and Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) are far from the city — budget 60-90 minutes and ¥150-300 for taxi. Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) is integrated with the high-speed rail station — the most convenient airport in China.

Beijing
Beijing Capital (PEK) → City Center
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Airport Express (metro) | 25-35 min to Dongzhimen | ¥25 | Runs 6:00-22:30. Every 10 min. Connects to Metro Lines 2, 10, 13 at Dongzhimen and Sanyuanqiao | | Taxi | 45-70 min | ¥120-180 | Depends on traffic. Beijing traffic can double the time | | Didi | 45-70 min | ¥100-150 | Usually cheaper than taxi. Book through Alipay app |
Recommendation: Airport Express is fast, cheap, and avoids Beijing’s legendary traffic. Only take a taxi/Didi if you have heavy luggage and a central hotel — and even then, the Express + a short taxi from Dongzhimen is often faster than sitting in traffic the whole way.
Beijing Daxing (PKX) → City Center
Daxing is Beijing’s new mega-airport. It’s far — 46km south of the city center. Budget the time.
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Daxing Airport Express (metro) | 20 min to Caoqiao | ¥35 | Runs 6:00-22:30. Then transfer to Line 10. Caoqiao station has city check-in counters (check bags early if flying out later) | | High-speed rail (to Beijing West) | 28 min | ¥30-45 | Limited schedule. The station is IN the airport — most convenient if timing works | | Taxi/Didi | 60-90 min | ¥180-280 | Depends heavily on traffic. The southern approach to Beijing gets jammed |
Recommendation: The Airport Express is excellent — 20 minutes to Caoqiao, then Metro Line 10 to wherever you need. Taxi is viable for late-night arrivals when the metro isn’t running.

Shanghai
Shanghai Pudong (PVG) → City Center
PVG is far from downtown (30km east). You have three good options:
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Maglev + Metro | 8 min to Longyang Rd, then transfer | ¥50 (¥40 with same-day flight ticket) | Fastest option. 431 km/h top speed. Connects to Metro Lines 2, 7, 16 at Longyang Road. Runs 6:45-21:40 | | Metro Line 2 | 60-70 min direct | ¥7-9 | Slow but cheap. Goes straight to People’s Square, Nanjing Road, Jing’an Temple | | Taxi/Didi | 45-70 min | ¥160-220 | Convenient door-to-door but expensive |
Recommendation: For most travelers, the Maglev is the right call — it’s an experience (fastest commercial train in the world) and efficient. Then transfer to Metro Line 2 or grab a taxi from Longyang Road. For late-night arrivals (after 10pm), taxi is the only option.
Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) → City Center
SHA is the domestic hub, conveniently located 13km west of downtown. It’s integrated with Hongqiao Railway Station (high-speed trains) and Hongqiao transport hub.
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Metro Line 2 or Line 10 | 30-40 min | ¥5-6 | Direct to city center. Both lines run through the tourist core | | Taxi/Didi | 25-45 min | ¥50-90 | Quick and affordable |
Recommendation: Metro unless you have heavy luggage. SHA is so close to the city center that taxi is genuinely affordable if you’re tired.
Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) → City Center
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Metro Line 3 (North Extension) | 40-50 min to Tiyu Xilu | ¥8-12 | Connects to the main Metro network | | Airport Express Bus | 45-60 min | ¥20-30 | Multiple routes to different city areas | | Taxi/Didi | 40-60 min | ¥120-180 | Guangzhou traffic is unpredictable — taxi time varies widely |
Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) → City Center
Chengdu’s newer, bigger airport is far from the city (50km southeast). Don’t underestimate the distance.
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Metro Line 18 | 45-50 min to South Railway Station | ¥10-15 | Fast metro line, clean, runs 6:00-23:00 | | Airport Bus | 60-80 min | ¥15-25 | Multiple routes to different parts of Chengdu | | Taxi/Didi | 50-70 min | ¥150-200 | Expensive but convenient for late arrivals |
Note: If you can fly into Chengdu Shuangliu (CTU) instead, do it. CTU is only 16km from the city center (¥30-50 by taxi, 20 minutes). TFU is a beautiful airport but it’s in another time zone.
Shenzhen Bao’an (SZX) → City Center
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Metro Line 11 | 30-50 min depending on destination | ¥8-15 | Airport station is directly connected. Line 11 is an express line | | Taxi/Didi | 30-50 min | ¥80-150 | Depending on whether you’re going to Nanshan (closer) or Luohu (farther) |
Recommendation: Metro Line 11 is excellent — it was designed for airport access. Taxi if your destination isn’t near a metro station.
Xi’an Xianyang (XIY) → City Center
| Method | Time | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Metro Line 14 | 35-45 min to North Railway Station | ¥8-10 | Then transfer to Line 2 or 4 | | Airport Bus | 60-70 min | ¥25 | Multiple routes, including direct to Bell Tower area | | Taxi/Didi | 45-60 min | ¥120-160 | Flat rate from official taxi stand |
Recommendation: Metro is good. The airport bus goes directly to the Bell Tower area (where most hotels are) — convenient if you don’t want to transfer.
Late-Night Arrivals
Most Chinese airport metro lines stop running between 10:00-11:30pm. If you land late:
- Check if night buses run. Some cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou) have night bus routes from airports.
- Taxi/Didi is your fallback. Official taxi stands are outside arrivals — use them, not touts inside the terminal. Airport taxis in China are regulated and safe.
- Airport hotels: All major airports have attached hotels or nearby options (¥200-500). If you land after midnight, sometimes sleeping at the airport hotel and taking the morning metro is more pleasant than a ¥200 taxi at 1am.
Practical Tips
Payment: Airport Express tickets can be bought with cash, WeChat, or Alipay at ticket machines. Metro tickets — same. Taxis and Didi: digital payment preferred.
Scams at airports: “Taxi” touts inside the arrival hall offering “special price” are scams. Use the official taxi queue outside. If someone approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride, ignore them.
Luggage: All airport express trains and metros have space for luggage. It’s not luxurious but it works. Taxis have trunks — standard sedans fit 2 large suitcases.
Didi setup: Install the DiDi app or use the mini-program inside Alipay (English version available). It’s usually ¥10-30 cheaper than a taxi and eliminates the “where are you going?” language barrier — the destination is in the app.
The golden rule: In China, the airport-to-city transfer is almost never the problem you think it’ll be. The infrastructure is good, the signage is bilingual, and the options are clear. The real question is whether you want cheapest (metro), fastest (express train/Maglev), or most convenient (taxi/Didi). Pick your priority and go.
